The Rector's Grand Colan

It is a heraldic function column, made up of 11 medallions, each marked with the initial of one of the traditional medieval faculties that together constitute a university. The medallions connected by links in S, which converge towards the piece central, a medal of solid fine silver, with gilded parts and with the emblematic insignia of the university. The necklace was designed by academics Marian Florea – plastic artist, and Mihai Turcu – heraldist and executed by hand by the silversmith Zoltan Abraham. The necklace of great material and artistic value, is the donation of Sibiu businessmen value, is the donation of the Sibiu businessmen gathered in the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Sibiu County.

The column symbolizes the university, its autonomous status and its authority placed on the Rector’s shoulders. It is a heraldic piece of ceremony with the status of “royalty”, a sign of the position of Rector. By delegation, the senior magistrates of the Senate in solemn university missions outside the university, in which they represent the Rector, may wear the necklace. It is part of the Rector’s sumptuous attire, but can also be worn in modern ceremonial outfit.
